My 8 favorite lunch spots in the Dolomiti Superski area

It's not surprisingly you don't just go to the Dolomites to enjoy skiing once you've been introduced to the Italian cuisine. And let's face it, what could be better than a delicious Italian lunch on a terrace in the sun with a fantastic view? With about 300 days of sunshine a year in the Dolomites, the chance of a sunny terrace is quite high.

During a skihut tour in the Dolomiti Super Ski Area, I will, of course, have lunch with my group every day at a beautiful spot. The different sub-areas each have their gems to sit and eat. In this blog, I'll tell you what my favorite lunch spots in the Dolomiti Super Ski Area are and why.

1 Friedrich August

This so-called "Yak hut" is my absolute favorite in the Dolomiti Super Ski area. This hut is located just above Compitello. First of all, the view over Val di Fassa is stunning. In addition, it is a very attractive rifugio. Both the inside and the terrace are very cozy, completely in the style of the 'Yak'. By the way, in the winter they just walk in front of and under the terrace (in the summer they are a bit further away because they have half the mountain to themselves). And the food here is fantastic, from the salads to the pizzas. I can't name a favorite, because everything is very tasty. Make a reservation in advance, because it can be pretty busy...

2 Col Druscie

Col Druscie is located in the ski area of Cortina, Tofana, at the top of the gondolas that depart from the ice stadium. Downstairs is a Wine bar and upstairs is the restaurant with a beautiful terrace. The restaurant is kind of a high-end restaurant, with excellent food, but a bit pricey. However, it is incomparably delicious to sit there on the terrace.
The adjacent observatory is also very nice.

3 Capanna Ra Valles

One cable car further up, up the Tofana, you’ll find Capanna Ra Valles. The highest pizzeria in the Dolomites. Another top spot with an absolutely fantastic view, almost 360 degrees around. To taste the really fantastic pizzas, you have to sit inside, because there is no service on the terrace. You can sit on the terrace, but then you have to pick up a sandwich or a pizza slice yourself. But I can recommend you to eat a pizza inside, because they are really super good.

4 Plan Boè

This restaurant, rifugio Plan Boé, is located just above Arabba. If you ski from Corvara to Arabba, you will pass here. The terrace is fantastic, with a magnificent view of the slopes in front of you and the rugged peaks around you. The food here is also excellent, especially the goulash soup is recommended: it is served in a hollowed-out round bread! Apart from the fact that this looks very tasty, the soup also tastes excellent. And the friendly service makes it a small party.

5 Sasslong Hütte

The Sasslonghütte is located right above Santa Christina, with a magnificent view of (as the name suggests) the Sasslong.
The menu is typical South Tyrol with both Italian and typical Austrian dishes on the menu. One of my favorites here is the delicious Kaiserschmarrn, which is served in a frying pan. Really a winner, but the other dishes are also absolutely top-notch. And the terrace is in one word: divine. After lunch, you really have to be motivated to strap your skis back on, unless the sun has disappeared behind the summit of the Sasslong, because then it cools down quickly. In January, this happens early in the afternoon, but in March you can stay on the terrace until the lifts close.

6 La Brancia

La Brancia is located in the ski resort of Alta Badia / Corvara. Beautifully located in the middle of this very popular central part of the Dolomiti Super Ski area. A nice rifugio with a nice big terrace. They don't make reservations, so make sure you're there on time for lunch, then you can still find a great spot. And the food is just Italian good.

7 Rifugio Padon

This is actually a bit of an odd one out, as this restaurant is exclusively self-service. But... For a self-service restaurant, it's certainly okay. The reason this one is one of my favorites, is the fantastic view of the Marmolada right in front of you. There should be no wind, because then it will get a bit chilly on the terrace. But if the conditions are right, the view is unreal.

8 Anna’s Tal

And last, but not least: Anna's Tal. Anna's Tal is located along the descent from Seceda to Ortisei. You almost literally ski across the terrace. Actually, you don't go here so much to have lunch as to eat the famous apple strudel. The apple strudel of Anna's Tal is the best of the entire Dolomites. And I should know, because I don't really like apple strudel at all, but this one is really tasty! And you can choose: plain, with (warm) vanilla sauce or with whipped cream. Or with both, of course....

Would you like to have lunch in one or more of these huts? Then take a look at BergXperience's ski hut tours. During a trip, we will definitely visit one or more of these terraces.
