Hiking with kids from hut to hut

A bit of scrambling, crossing mountain streams without a bridge, hiking among the cows and beautiful views. A hiking with kids from hut to hut is a wonderful hiking adventure. Exciting, but not dangerous and of course with legs of a length that children can handle.

From hut to hut with children - an adventure

Several families have already hiked a 4-day hut to hut tour, which is suitable for children from 7-8 years old. This tour is described below.

Like all tours, this tour also starts with an overnight stay at B&B Villa Vittorio. Here you will briefed about your tour. We will also indicate where the route can be made shorter or easier or, if wanted, more difficult or more challenging.

As BergXperience makes hut to hut tours on measure, it is also possible to do other routes. Please contact us for options for a tour which is suitable for you and your child(ren).

Price:
from € 395,- pp (3 days)
from € 525,- pp (4 days)
from € 645- pp (5 days)

Day 1 The first ascent

This first day we will transfer you to the staring point: Passo Cibiano.
Here your tour starts with an ascent of the Monte Rite. After about 2 hours you have a magnificent view and you can enjoy a drink and some food on the terrace. In July and August there is also a navetta (van) going up, so you can choose not to hike up.

From the Monte Rite you will hike down an adventurous itinerary to rifugio Talamini. This path will mainly lead you through the forest, where you will cross several streams on (sometimes very) narrow paths. Mostly these paths seem more difficult for the parents than for the children. As this path is not much traveled, it might be overgrown with (tall) grass.
The rifugio where you will sleep is a small, but very nice rifugio. There is a little playground and a rather big lawn.

This second day will be a short day. First you'll follow the road for a while until entering the forest to start the ascending to the foot of Monte Pelmo. First through the forest, over numerous streams. Later the trail gets rockier and you can already see the Monte Pelmo high up in front of you. If you are lucky you will encounter sheep, cows or horses along the way, as they graze here on the flanks of the Pelmo. You will spend the night in a beautiful hut, just under the over 3000 meters high Pelmo.

This is the third day already. Today will be a longer day, with a strenuous climb at the end of the day. Not a very difficult day, but a bit long,

First you'll hike around the foot of the Pelmo to the Passo Staulanza. There, or a bit further at a nice 'malga' you can have a nice lunch.

After lunch, you'll start climbing up to rifugio Coldai. Just above Coldai is a beautiful lake. However, you can also save this for the next morning.

This last day will be an easy day. It's only about 2 huors hike down to Pecol to catch the bus.

Is would be nice to go to the lake of Coldai first, before going down.

Once down in Pecol you can take it easy going to the busstop, which is located just next to a gelateria. So take a delicious icecream as a reward for the effots of this tour.

Villa Vittorio

As all tours start from Forno di Zoldo, you will sleep the night before the tour in Villa Vittorio, our own B&B. Villa Vittorio has 2-person rooms and 1 multi-bed room. The bathroom is shared.

Simple

Although rifugios have long ceased to be simple mountain huts, you shouldn't expect the luxury of a hotel either. Compare it to a simple guest house.
It is still a stay on top of the mountain, where all the supplies have to be brought up and all the waste has to be transported back down. Mostly you will sleep in a more-beds room or a dormitory in the rifugio. The bathrooms are always shared. he water supply may also be limited at altitude. Similarly not all huts have drinkable water.

Private rooms

On your request, I can try to make a reservation for a smaller room. Not all rifugios have those, and if they do, they only have a few, which are often booked up very fast. For a smaller room, a separate surcharge per person will be charged, this will be indicated in the travel proposal.

3-course dinner

When you arrive at the rifugio, you will be asked to fill in the menu. The rifugios offer a 3-course menu: a primo piatto (1st course), a secondo piatto (2nd course) and a dolce (dessert). The next morning from 7 a.m./8:30 a.m., breakfast is ready, so you can continue your hike in time.

In any case, what you need is a good backpack and hiking boots A/B with good profile and a rain jacket.

In the attached packing list you will find what to bring. Material in the frame marked with * can be borrowed from BergXperience for a small fee. Handy, especially if it's the first time you're doing a hut-to-hut tour, so you don't have to buy everything yourself.

  • Insurance Please make sure you have a travel insurance, which also covers mountaineering. Also check whether the health insurance covers costs made abroad.
  • Paying in refuges It's not always possible to pay by card in the refuges. Make sure you carry enough cah with you to pay for your drinks and other expenses.
  • Waste  Since most mountain huts, and especially those that are only open in summer, can only be reached on foot, the supply and disposal of waste is a challenge. This is often done with a small goods lift and the last part on foot. That is why the managers of the rifugios ask you to leave as little waste as possible behind and to take your own waste back to the valley as much as possible. You will therefore find few trash cans in a mountain hut.
  • Member of a mountaineering club We assume that everyone who regularly hikes in the mountains is a member of a mountaineering club. Some rifguios offer a discount when you are a member (of an European mountaineering club). This discount has been taken into account in the pricing of the tour. Any additional costs due to not being a member will be paid by BergXperience. If you are a member, please show your membership card when checking in at the rifugio.
  • Your stay at Villa Vittorio The night before your tour you will stay in Villa Vittorio, as the tour basically starts from here. If desired, it is possible to book one or more extra nights in Villa Vittorio before or after your tour. Please contact us for more information..
  • How to come to Forno di Zoldo Our B&B is located in Forno di Zoldo, which is on the east side of the Dolomites. From Northern Europe you drive immediately after the Brenner Pass via the Pusteria Valley. Because we are relatively close to Venice, we are easily accessible by plane. From Venice Airport it is about a 1:15 hour drive to Forno di Zoldo. There are also buses running to Longarone (about 1 hour), which is located at the beginning of our valley. From there we can arrange a transfer for you.
