My 7 Favorite Ski Huts in the Dolomites

My 7 favorite rifugios

During a ski hut tour, you will sleep in a different mountain hut, or rifugio, every night. Especially in the Dolomiti Super Ski Area there are many rifugios, which vary in location, views and accessibility. Each rifugio has its own atmosphere and appearance.
In this blog I describe the rifugios that are my favorite. Every ski hut tour I guide, I visit at least one of these rifugios, but often 2 or more.

1 Lagazuoi

My absolute favorite. Located at an altitude of 2700 m, Lagazuoi offers fantastic views. And in good weather also beautiful sunsets, but the sunrise is my absolute favorite. The most wonderful time of winter for this is January. An additional advantage is that you don't have to get up very early (but it is a lot colder). The food is also fantastic in this rifugio.
And... the next morning you can start the wonderful descent through the so-called 'Hidden Valley'. A beautiful long descent that takes you towards the ski resort of Alta Badia.

2 Son Forca

Another winner. As a rifugio, Son Forca is relatively 'basic', but its location just below the steep rock faces of the Cristallo massif is truly breathtaking. And the welcome by the always cheerful Paolo makes you feel right at home here.
The next morning you can enjoy skiing in the area of Rio Gere and Faloria, where it is really super quiet until the afternoon. You have the slopes (almost) all to yourself.

3 Rifugio Marmolada

Rifugio Marmolada is located on Lake Fedaia, right under the glacier of the Marmolada. This rifugio is not located directly on the slopes, but they have found a very nice solution for that. If the conditions are right, they will pick you up on the other side of Lake Fedaia with the snowscooter and then you will be towed across the frozen lake to the other side. There you have to climb up the shore. But it is certainly a special experience to race across the lake behind the snowscooter. The rifugio itself is very authentic shall we say. A bit dated, but super friendly owners. And when you enter, the fireplace burns cozy, so you immediately feel at home and can warm up after a nice day on the slopes.
The next day you can take the snowmobile across the lake again, but with the van is faster and then you can be sure to be at the bottom of the Marmolada in time for the first lift up.

4 Juac

The Juac rifugio is located in the Val Gardena, above St Christina. This rifugio attaches great importance to sustainability. This also means that it is a relatively simple cabin, but there is no lack of comfort. This rifugio is located just above the slopes when you ski down from the Col Raiser. You should call in advance to indicate what time you expect to be there. You’ll wait along the slopes until they come to pick you up with a snowscooter. Hanging behind the snowscooter, you will be pulled up to the hut. The next morning you ski back to the regular slope on a slope they have prepared themselves.

5 Scoiatolli

Rifugio Scoiatolli is located right next to the world-famous 'towers' of Cinque Torri. Especially in the summer this is a tourist highlight with an open-air museum about the First World War (Grande Guerra). But also in winter the Cinque Torri give a beautiful view. The biggest attraction of this rifugio is the hot tub outside which is only used in winter. You can reserve this hot tub in advance. Be on time, because the hot tub can only be used once a day. The hot tub is heated with wood and they start heating in the afternoon. It's not cheap, but once you've booked it, there's no time limit and you get a bottle of champagne with it. You can easily sit in the hot tub with up to six people, but you can also use it with a larger group and alternate with each other. Imagine being able to sit outside in the warm water!
And last but not least: the food here is fantastic and in the morning there is an excellent breakfast buffet.

6 Duca d’Aosta

Another rifugio in the area of Cortina d'Ampezzo. Duca d'Aosta is located at the foot of the so-called 'women's downhill', or a very steep stretch between 2 large rocks, over which the women's World Cup downhill races every January. From the terrace you have a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains and also here you’ll experience beautiful sunsets. The rifugio is relatively small to spend the night, but luxurious: there are four 3-person rooms with private bathrooms. The latter is quite luxurious for rifugios.

7 Negritella

This rifugio is located at the foot of Catinaccio, or the Rosengarten massif. A very impressive rock massif, which you really have a beautiful view of. Negritella is located in the ski area of Vigo di Fassa, just outside Pozza di Fassa. The ski resort is relatively small, but wonderfully quiet with one beautiful black slope called, Tomba la Bomba. In Negritella you really get the 'old-fashioned' hut feeling. But the nice thing about this rifugio is that they have a (small) sauna in the basement. For the enthusiasts.

Would you like to visit one of these rifugios in winter? Then take a look at the range of ski hut tours here, then you will certainly spend the night in one or more of these huts.
